“I want to whole world to know about my country and my people,” she said, after beating out 82 other competitors from around the world.

With her win, Navarette takes over the reign of last year’s competition winner, Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela.

During the interview portion of the pageant, Olympic gold medal figure skater Evan Lysacek asked Navarette how she felt about unsupervised internet use.

A 22-year-old Mexico woman has won the Miss Universe pageant after donning a flowing red gown and telling an audience it's important to teach kids family values.

Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara was first to answer an interview question Monday night and the last of 83 contestants standing in the headline-grabbing pageant on the Las Vegas Strip.

Her one-strap gown flowed behind her like a sheet as she walked. Earlier, she smiled in a violet bikini as she confidently strutted across the stage.

“I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” she said, with the help of an interpreter.  “We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”

It was likely this answer that helped Navarette secure the Miss Universe crown over the heavily favored Miss Philippines, who did not fare as well during the question and answer period, ultimately placing fifth overall.

Evan Lysacek joined Jane Seymour, Chynna Phillips, Chazz Palminteri, William Baldwin, Criss Angel, Tamron Hall, Sheila E and Niki Taylor as the pageant’s celebrity judges.

Jimena Navarrete Rosete (born February 22, 1988) is a Mexican beauty pageant titleholder and the 2010 Miss Universe. She was crowned Nuestra Belleza Jalisco in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on July 16, 2009, and Nuestra Belleza Mexico on September 20, 2009, in Meida, Yucate.
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Navarrete studied nutrition prior to her participation in beauty pageants. After winning her state pageant, she competed against thirty-three other contestants in Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2009, where she obtained first place. She is the second consecutive winner from Jalisco, following Karla Carrillo, the outgoing titleholder. Navarrete won the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, the second representative of Mexico to win the title, after Lupita Jones in 1991.
